Zoloft (Pfizer, New York, NY, USA) belongs to the pharmacological group of antidepressants and contains sertraline as an active component. Sertraline selectively blocks the process of reuptake in the nerve cells of serotonin.

The medication eliminates panic attacks, social anxiety disorders, and other manifestations of mental disorders. Zoloft is indicated for use by adults and children aged between 13 years and 17 years old to treat obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Studies published in Cochrane Review and The Lancet Journal in 2010 defined Zoloft as one of the most effective medication (even more effective than Prozac or Fluoxetine) compared with other antidepressants. At the same time, the drug proved to be more effective in severe depressive disorder than in the moderate form of the disease.

Composition and form of release

The medication is produced in tablet form which contains sertraline as an active component in a dosage of 50 mg or 100 mg.

Indications for use

Indications for the use of Zoloft include various forms of depressive states and social phobia. A doctor may also prescribe this antidepressant to children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Besides, recent studies have emerged that Zoloft has shown high efficacy in the treatment of various chronic pain syndromes [Gustaw K., 200; Engel C.C., 1998; Goodnick P.J., 1997; Singh N.N., Misra S., 2002].

The drug eliminates the signs of panic disorders, such as anxiety and the fear of loneliness. Zoloft is also used for treating post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dosage

Zoloft tablets should be taken once a day in the morning or evening regardless of food intake. Dosage may vary depending on what the patient is treated. For example, in the case of obsessive-compulsive disorders and depression, the dose starts at 50 mg per day.

For the treatment of social phobia, panic disorders, and post-traumatic stress conditions, admission begins with 25 mg per day, increasing the dose by 25 mg per week.

It is necessary to understand that during treatment with Zoloft the effect of the drug will occur only after four weeks, while side effects (nausea, constipation, headaches, insomnia, worsening ejaculation, and anorgasmia) may appear almost immediately.

Most often, these adverse reactions quickly pass, but if they continue, the patient should reduce the dosage to 25 mg. If this does not help or the primary effect did not occur after two months of use, the patient should ask the doctor to prescribe another medicine.

Symptoms of depression usually disappear within 4-6 weeks after starting the treatment. Reduction of some somatic symptoms and normalization of sleep may occur earlier, 1-2 weeks after the first intake, which indicates that the therapy will be effective.

Contraindications

Zoloft should not be taken with increased sensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients. It is contraindicated to pregnant women and children under six years of age. The joint intake of Zoloft and MAO inhibitors is contraindicated due to the risk of developing serotonin syndrome with symptoms such as agitation, tremor, and hyperthermia.

Zoloft treatment should be interrupted at least seven days before the initiation of therapy with an irreversible MAO inhibitor. Concurrent use of sertraline and pimozide is also contraindicated.

Side effects

At the beginning of the treatment, there can be some side effects such as excessive sweating, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, headache, weight loss and anxiety. These side effects are usually mild and disappear in 1-2 weeks with continued use of the drug.
